a v day present for myself - earliest bedtime for this week!
attended a short sharing on wed and i must say i really enjoyed myself and at the same time learnt a great deal from our sch counsellor.
in view of the A levels results release, this sharing was put in place to help first time "graduating teachers" handle the students' emotion as well as our own.
2 interesting pts which i'll always remember:
- never say "it's ok" or "it's all right" to someone who's in a self pity state because to them, you aren't empathsizing
- councilors aren't allowed to give their patients tissue! that's to prevent any form of dependency from developing
at the end of the session, it dawned upon me that all these emotions come about as a result of our own expectations or that of the society. teachers expecting their hard work to pay off, and if it doesn't, blaming and guilt set in. students burst into tears crying because they did not meet their target grades. else they cry because their grades are really too poor to get them anywhere, and so, the system rejects them from uni because the minimum expected grades are not met.
meaningless - chasing after the wind... ...what in the world am i doing in this place?
today, i had a glimpse of how the gal diagnosed with depression in my previous civics class would have possibly felt. my thrashing was meant for the entire group and not at her but it was taken personally. no need to reiterate the rest of the story but from my perspective, i meant no ill intention and was misunderstood. similar storyline repeated and i was totally taken back by such reaction.
