Today was the fourth visit @ Dr Chua's. As there was a need to draw blood sample, I had to fast from last night till the blood was drawn. The blood samples were requried to complete the the OSCAR analysis meant to screen Down Syndrome. The blood test that measures for markers like PAPP-A (pregnancy associated plasma protein A) and hCG. These levels coupled with NT measurement and mother's age provide a risk assessment for Down syndrome.
I thought it was only a valve full of blood that will be drawn and to my horror, the clinic assistant drew 4 valves full!
After which, it was ultrasound to check on baby junior and confirming the gender. Last checkup was a preliminary conclusion and this month, it will be a confirmed one as the genitals would be clearly formed. As much as I was secretly wishing that the preliminary conclusion wouldn't come true, doc was spot on. And a boy it shall be!
There must be some kind of bond between us as I already had a boy's name in mind since the second month and I just can't seem to settle on any girl's name at all. I wonder if it's baby telling me to forget about the redundant job of looking for names that won't be used anyway.
This week's ultrasound saw him doubled in length again, with a crown to rump of 10.8cm. He was also seen practicing breathing when he opened his mouth wide open. Skeletal structures are much more obvious now with the increased deposition of calcium. Limbs are also distinct and boy, he was soooooooooooooo active! He was moving and kicking all the time. Once, he even had his leg flex over to his head! Other than these structures, we could also see the stomach and heart through the ultrasound.
